about

This song came to me a dream, fully formed, after returning from 5 days playing and compering at Knockengorroch Festival. While playing round the fire through the long night at the festival, the idea for the song first emerged. When I got home I went to sleep on the sofa and when I woke up, the words and tune for the song were in my head. I first played it on the Oud (Arabic lute) and recorded it on the banjo. 10 years later my friend Gabriel Rom made this arrangement with synthesiser, and I loved it, but it was so different from my usual traditional folk style that it did not fit on an album. In January 2024 there was a burst of activity among my (mostly women) friends, using an online game to transform their selfies to look like Vikings, so I made a video of some of their shots, mixed up with 10 female Muses - mostly celebrity musicians, but with some wildcards. (The game is to identify the Muses) . The video had over 1000 views in the first 24 hours, so I was prompted to make the track available for download here. Video is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQIWcIoH6Z0

lyrics

Aubade at Knockengorroch

Tell me, did you see
The light of the fire on the cheeks of the girl
And the stars high above, dancing in her eyes
And her smile at the cry of the child in her arms
Take my breath away

Tell me, did you see
As she rose from the fire to go dancing with babe
And they swayed in the music, Swirled in the mist of the meadow
As it carried her up on the wings of the dawn Of a new day.

Tell me, did you see,
The man by himself by the fire watch her dance
And the waves of her joy, breaking the dam of his dreams
As he rose on the flood to go out in the dawning to meet her

Tell me, did you see,
The flickering light of the fire in their eyes
And the cry of the babe
Dissolve in the warmth of their laughter
As their love lay like dew on the grass and the trees Of tomorrow

Tell me, did you see?
